The Music in My Headphones

When I put on my headphones I block out the world. I turn on music and click up the volume. Then I close my eyes, I fade into the music and I leave behind the sounds that I do not want to hear. I push aside the thoughts that I am afraid to confront. With the touch of a button, the click of a mouse, I escape into who I want to be.

With the right song, I feel like I am another person. Beats and vocals seep into my bones and shake me free of my inhibitions. Pulsing rhythms entice me to walk with confidence— to strut forward despite doubts. Music has the potential to create the mood that gives me the guts to step out and let my hair down. With the right vibe, I can let my true self out without a second thought.

No matter what bullshit life sends, I always find a playlist to give me the enthusiasm to keep moving forward and thinking positively.

At this point in time, my life is pretty cherry but I just feel blah— like I am stuck in a rut. So, my current playlist is filled with bubble gum electronic music. The tunes have levity that, though generic, can make anyone let go and dance. Currently Cascada is playing though my headphones.

Forget the fact that most of the Cascada songs sound exactly the same. Almost every track has the ability to brighten my mood because of its energy. So put on your headphones, turn up the volume, and let that bubble gum sound get you popping!

Deared to kill a king’s dare…

“Make sure I don’t wock the knater over.”

What is wrong with this sentence? Look carefully now. Ok, yeah, the mistake is obvious. The sentence should read “knock the water over” and not “wock the knater over.”

These mistakes happen sometimes when I talk without giving enough thought to what is coming out of my mouth. Some people spew their emotions without thinking. Some people even let spit fly like missles. Other people may say precisely what they mean to say. I, however, tend to mix up sentence structure and mish-mash words when I am not fully conscious of the thoughts I am communicating.

To give myself credit, these verbal messes only occur sporadically. The idea of constantly confusing my word order is kind of sad. In fact, I have the perfect movie to demonstrate my point. A classic Mel Brooks comedy that has made me laugh ever since I was even too young to understand the true meaning of all the jokes. Action: Robin Hood Men in Tights.

The Sherriff suffers from both word and sentence mish-mash disorder. Ha! If you have never seen the entire movie, I highly recommend it. =D

I Wanna be a Weeetch

There is a Halloween story in my family, a classic Teresa tale. It is a short quippy episode that reveals a bit about my childhood and a lot about how my current fascinations have come to pass. I only know the story through others since my memories do not include those first few years of my life.

As the story goes, I was about three years old. During that Halloween season I longed to dress in costume and take part in the festivities that my older siblings enjoyed. One of my sisters had a flapper costume and one was dressed as Jem. While these sisters donned very feminine attire and bright colors, I wanted to wear black. I wanted a pointy hat and a broom to fly on. “I wanna be a weeeeeetch! I wanna be a weeeetch!”

That is right. A witch. Not at all an unusual Halloween costume, but my childhood fervor for the magic has hardly diminished over time.  The ABC family show Sabrina the Teenage Witch kept my dream of another world alive all through the drama of middle school. I fell in love with Harry Potter before the rest of the US had even heard about him. My sister revealed the magic of the movie Practical Magic to me and I have been re-watching it ever since. I even have ventured into the world of chick-fiction that recounts the imaginative trials and tribulations of magic-practicing women in modern society.

Now, added to my attraction to the world of witches and spells, I find that the idea of being an elf would be pretty badass too (*courtesy of my bf from high school =D*).

So today, while watching LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring, I decided to embrace my odd fascination and hope that my wild imagination and dalliances in the magic created in these media will some day lead to a written creation of my own. Three cheers: “I wanna be a weeeetch, I wanna be a weeeetch, I wanna be a weeeeetch!”

Annual Bridget Jones Re-Read

Believe it or not, there are still people who re-read books. While some books are read-and-ditch material and other books are kept for years, not all books are re-read with regularity. Yes, I am one of those people who re-reads books that I really enjoy.

I have a list of books that I return to typically once a year. This list includes Harry Potter books, Pride and Prejudice, and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Though all of these books have been made into flicks, no amount of big-budget-Hollywood-blockbuster glam can replace the pleasure of reading the original stories. Plus, as if it was not already apparent, my imagination turns words on pages into a crazy world without the use of special effects. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy to movies too… *psha*

Well, I am currently re-reading Bridget Jones’s Diary. For those of you who like the movie, read the book– bizarre Bridget is much more hilarious and loveable in the book.

Now, folks, to the purpose of this post: a quote. Juicy humor packed into a paragraph. The words of Bridget written by Helen Fielding. Oh, Bridge…

Completely exhausted by entire day of date-preparation. Being a woman is worse than being a farmer–there is so much harvesting and crop spraying to be done… the whole performance is so highly tuned you only need to neglect it for a few days for the whole thing to go to seed. Sometimes I wonder what I would be like it left to revert to nature–with a full beard and handlebar moustache on each shin…’

Ah, I love that farming is declared to be analogous to waxing, shaving etc. Good stuff… v.g. =D
