Rainy Daze

Drip, drip, drop little Monday showers.

Rainy Daaaaaaze, little water drops, puddles for days.

Here in the Bay, the fall brings the rain. It is such a blissful change– summer definitely needed to end. As the leaves fall, the chimneys start emitting the smell of wood, the days get shorter, and the sky gets darker. Grey clouds block out the sun, replacing streams of light with waves of rain. In case I have not said it enough, I love this time of year (granted, I would love the prospect of snow even more, but I’ll take what I can get).

The constant drizzle reminds me of my time in Scotland. Most of the time I spent abroad was combined with inches and inches of rain–every day, every type of shower from drizzle to deluge. In fact, the town where I was staying had to close its bridge for a bit as a result of the flooding.

Tangential conversation aside, it rained a lot. Some days I would opt out of going to class in order to cuddle up under my covers while the rain poured down outside. Given that the heat was only put on in the late night/early morning, staying inside under the blankets was the only way to prevent a chill from taking over every inch of my body.

One of the courses I took while abroad was a film class. The class gave me the opportunity to watch films that I would usually pass by. On a particularly rainy afternoon, I stayed under the covers to review the films that required my academic attention. And so, as a result of this rainy-train of thought, I present to you the media of this post: Morvern Callar and All About My Mother.

Morvern Callar is a UK production that follows the lead character through the trials and tribulations of death, the desire to escape, and the realization that the grass is never greener on the other side.

All About My Mother is a Spanish film that deals with sexuality issues, gender roles, and the darker aspects of life’s complications.

It is fitting for me to associate today’s rainy daze with these films because both flims are so grey and unafraid of the grittier parts of life. It is also fitting for me to associate days like today with knee-high fishing boots… but that is another story all together, folks.

Raining Sideways

Weather is unpredictable. What is predictable, however, is the manner in which The Weather Channel turns every event into a gripping tale of man vs. nature. It doesn’t matter if it is hot, cold, or rainy, the team at The Weather Channel likes to create epic broadcastings for every flicker of mother nature’s movement.

Yes, a hurricaine is a big deal; the effects are never a laughing matter. Yet, I am always amazed at the play-by-play like approach that The Weather Channel uses.

Now, to the point. While I was stopped briefly on The Weather Channel yesterday, I heard one of the on-site team members utter a line that caused me to LOL and roll around the floor with tear streams of joy rolling down my face. Cue Ollie Williams, a fictional weatherman on Family Guy.

Yes, I heard the real-life weatherman utter “it’s raining sideways” and I was immediately reminded of jolly Ollie. Oh Family Guy… good laughs.
